I will be brief as I have not slept yet. We recently signed Aladdins Castle Cafe, a food cart in SE Portland. I am REALLY interested in the rapid growth of the food cart industry and wanted to discover what it needed in a web presence. After much research and discussion I had finally built the Portland Food Cart Web Framework. It is an easily customizable framework built on WordPress with responsive design techniques. It is fast, easy to navigate on all devices and even has an image gallery that responds to screen resolution and adjusts accordingly.

It's Done!

Having built this framework it opens up the door for rapid development which in turn allows us to offer an amazing site at a low cost. Most food carts do not have a big budget for their website so this particular solution was key. Here is a breakdown of some of the features and what led me to set things up this way:

Responsive design. This means that the site will size according to the screen size of the device being used to view the site. There is no mobile re-direct and the site maintains it’s original design and scales elegantly. No zooming in or horizontal scrolling is required of the user.

Built on the WordPress CMS. Not only is this great for rapid development but it also give the client an opportunity to easily update their menu, hours, images, videos etc…

Responsive image gallery. Great for looking at those yummy food pictures on any device.

SEO. While there are a TON of food carts in Portland Oregon the market is still very young making it very easy to shoot any food cart up the google ladder for all sorts of different keywords.

Next on this list will be shooting a promo/interview hybrid video to feature on the main page. This is important because most people do like to read, if you read this whole entry I doff my hat to you.

I will be releasing a dev version of the theme in the coming months but as of now we are only doing custom orders. Also in my sleepy haze I made a splash page to feature the framework.

Porn sites have something new to fight over!

Sales are currently limited but ICANN has opened the gates for .xxx domain purchasing. To the naked eye this looks like a great thing for the adult entertainment industry. You will now have a much better shot at getting the url you desire as long as it is a .xxx, should be great right?

Never again will you mix up Dicks sporting goods web site with a raunchy porn site because come on, who is going to put a .xxx at the end of their search to find anything but porn? Right? RIGHT!?!

Now I would like to touch on what this actually means for you. Firstly no one is doing you a favor here, this is purely about money and control. .xxx domains are going to start at around $100 a year and only go up. The initial land rush for these domains will be dominated by the big wigs in the adult entertainment industry. The young pornographic entrepreneur won’t even have a chance. All the successful porn sites that are coasting on their automated content and ad revenue are in for a rude awakening. Google ranks are going to change drastically for everyone who has their hat in this ring. The little guy who put a ton of time and effort in to SEO is going to be annihilated by the big companies who have the capital to buy up all the domains.

Big Brother is watching you

Now lets think a little deeper. It is obvious that a big part of this is about making money but lets touch on control. As our country continues to divide itself drastically I can’t help but think there are some motives here. Like hmmm I dunno, maybe making it mandatory for adult sites to be .xxx? No we would never let that happen right? RIGHT?!? There is already a running database of celebrity names that you are not allowed to register as a .xxx so let that be a little foreshadowing for you. Even Donald Trump is on the list. Keep a close eye on this one, it’s going to be a big deal.

A well-defined target market is the cornerstone of any solid marketing campaign. But defining the target market can be a big challenge, especially for start-ups that have yet to test the waters or don’t have the budgets to hire large marketing firms. Unfortunately, I see quite a few start-ups make the mistake of assuming too broad a target market. Most of these instances can be chalked up to overly active enthusiasm about the concept or product, marking this as one of the few exceptions to enthusiam being a great motivator for business.

68% of US business-to-business (B2B) companies allocate 5% or less of their company revenue on marketing

When you’ve stumbled across a really great business idea, it’s sometimes hard not to think, “everyone will want to frequent my [social network/mobile app/daily deal site/luxury dog kennel/etc.]!” And while this may someday be true for the future Zuckerbergs, Jobs, and Schmidts of us, even the big guys and gals have to start small.

The leading problem with a wide target market is one of research. While your new service may be geared toward all internet users, for instance, you can’t research “everyone” or even “ages 16 to 65.” You can, however, target “Millennials” or “Gen Xers” and so on. Once you have developed a narrowed audience, you have the ability to look deeper into the demographic, psychographic, and socioeconomic details of each group.

Older generations access gov't and financial info much more than Millennials

For instance, did you know that Gen Xers (currently ages 34 to 45) are significantly more likely to read a daily newspaper than Millennials (currently ages 18 to 33), but they are also more likely to watch more than an hour of television each day? Did you know about a quarter of older Baby Boomers and those from the Silent Generation read blogs? ["Generations 2010." Pew Internet.] Did you know that households in Albuquerque, New Mexico, spend about 65% more than the typical United States household each year on apparel and related services, even though their retail spending in nearly every other category is below average? [Business Analyst Online. ESRI.]

These are the details you’ll miss if you don’t narrow your market, and your unfocused advertising will suffer as a result. It will become too expensive and thin to make that crucial impression, and messages trying to reach too wide an audience will generally not be listened to by anyone at all. If you want to be heard, make an impression, and spread brand awareness, you need to learn who you want to target, what they like to do, where they live, when they are most likely to respond, and how to create meaningful engagements with them effectively.

Demographics of gamers across all platforms are becoming democratized

And once you narrow to some audience or niche, you still aren’t done. In fact, you’re never done. You must continue to dig deeper into your niche, or you risk missing important trends and opportunities and ultimately losing your audience, little by little.

It is ideal to “broaden” your reach as you saturate your markets and grow your revenue and business model. However, this is done not by generalizing audiences but by continuing to add new yet highly drilled down audiences to the campaign. Always ensure that your market segments are measurable to some substantial degree, or you may never be able to capture one at all.
